So let’s take a look at the Amigurumi broccoli free crochet pattern.

Supplies:

  • Small amount of any worsted weight yarn (4-Medium) in light green colour. I have used Red Heart Super saver yarn in the colour Sprint Green
  • Small amount of any yarn DK weight(3-Light) in dark green colour. I have used Patons Astra in Emerald
  • 3mm crochet hook / suitable crochet hook
  • Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stitch markers (to mark the beginner of the round)
  • Stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • MC – Magic Circle
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
  • dec – sc2tog in the specified stitches (this is a decrease)
  • [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round
  • sc [x] – If you see sc followed by a number x, then make 1 sc in the next x stitches

Skill Level:

Easy

Construction:

The stem of the broccoli is worked in continuous rounds , the head of the broccoli is then crocheted directly on to the stem. No sewing of parts involved.

Pattern Notes:

  • This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
  • The broccoli looks good when the stitches on the stem are tighter, the broccoli head can be crochet loose as it will give it a fuller look.
  • WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies. French knots work great. Plastic safely eyes can be a choking hazard. If you want to add a face to the broccoli, I’d recommend French knots using thin black yarn/thread.

Generic Amigurumi Tips:

  • Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
  • The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
  • Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. They always turn out better when you do this. I say this from personal experience. 🙂

Pattern:

Broccoli Stem:
  • MC
  • R1: 6 sc in the MC [6]
  • R2: 6 inc [12]
  • R3-4: 1 sc in each stitch around [12]
  • R5: (sc 1, 1 dec); rep from * all around [9]
  • R6-7: 1 sc in each stitch around [9]
  • R8: In BLO, 1 sc in each stitch around [9]
  • R9: 1 sc in each stitch around [9]

Fasten off, thread the tail into a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut.

Press the last round R9 using the back of a crochet hook like this and create a depression. This helps in covering up the light green part when making the broccoli head.

Broccoli Head:

The broccoli head is worked directly on the stem into the front loop stitches of R8 of the Broccoli Stem. There should be 9 such front loops.

  • R1: Join yarn using sl st into the first front loop of R8 of the stem, ch3, *(dc 1, ch1)* 14 times into the same front loop of R8 of stem, *(dc 1, ch1)* 15 times into each of the next 8 front loops of the R8 of the Broccoli stem.

Cut yarn and fasten off with a long tail. Thread the tail into a tapestry needle and run it through the top of few dc stitches across to cover the top part of the stem.

With that you’re all done!!!
