So let’s take a look at the Amigurumi deer free crochet pattern.

Supplies:

  • Light/Medium shade of brown yarn for body , head and ears. I have used Red Heart comfort in Tan
  • Dark brown yarn for the antlers and nose , Red heart super saver in Coffee.
  • Beige/off white yarn for the muzzle.
  • Small amount of black yarn for embroidering the eyes/Plastic safety eyes
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • MC – Magic Circle
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
  • [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round

Pattern Notes:

  • This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
  • A well stuff body and head prevent the dreadful wobbly head.
  • WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies. French knots work great. Plastic safely eyes can be a choking hazard.

Tips before you start:

  • Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
  • The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
  • Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. They always turn out better when you do this. I say this from personal experience. 🙂

Nose:
In dark brown yarn:

MC
R1: 6 sc into the circle [6] R2: 1 sc in each stitch around [6] Fasten off with a long tail to sew the nose to the muzzle. Do not stuff the nose, just don’t cut the beginning tail of the MC. That itself works like light stuffing.

Antlers (Make 2):
In dark brown yarn:

MC
R1: 6 sc into the circle [6] R2-4: 1 sc in each stitch around [6] R5: 6 inc [12] We will now branch off for one side of the antler
R6: 1 sc in the next 6 stitches , join back to the first stitch to again form a round of 6 stitches (a smaller round). Leave the other 6 stitches unworked for now.
R7-9: 1 sc in each stitch around [6] Fasten off. Thread the tail through a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut. Do not stuff.

Join new yarn and pick up a stitch from one of the unworked stitches.
R1-3: 1 sc in the next stitches [6] Fasten off. Thread the tail through a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut.

Finishing:

Sew the muzzle to the head, the nose to the muzzle (slightly above the centre of the muzzle), the ears and the antlers to the head.  Attach the head to the body by sewing twice to avoid a wobbly head. Sew the arms to the body between R29 and R30.

Dress:

The dress I have made is adapted from Poppy Crochet Designs’. You can find the pattern HERE.
One thing to remember while making the dress though, make it and put it on the deer before sewing the head to the body , or else the head won’t pass through the dress opening 😀
