Free crochet pattern: Crochet toran, Indian bunting pattern

Torana, a bunting made with mango leaves and marigold flowers is considered auspicious in Hindu community and is usually hung at the front door/pooja rooms during festivals. My sister asked me to make one for her for the next Ganesha Chaturthi festival. So I decided to experiment as I couldn’t find a pattern online.

Materials needed:
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Worst weight/fine yarn in two colours(light and dark green shade preferred)
  • Small felt balls in yellow and orange colours. (You can even use crocheted flowers if you don’t have these)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
  • Stitch markers(optional)

Abbreviations:
  • Ch – chain
  • Sl st. – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • St – stitch

Vein of the leaf:
1. With light colour : Ch 23.
2. Sl st. into the second chain from hook and across. (22 stitches) Fasten off . Our vein of the leaf is ready.
I made all the veins first . Make as many as you want.
Leaf body:
1. Sl st and join dark colour yarn (at the end where we fastened off)
Row 1 Side A:
1. Insert hook in to the end where we fastened the vein.
2. Ch1 (you can put Stitch marker 1 here, stitch markers not shown in image), sc next 2 stitches.
3. Hdc in next 3 stitches.
4. Dc in next 10 stitches. hdc in next 3 stitches. sc in next 3 stitches. We should have reached the end of the vein by now. Side A completed.
5. Do not turn. We will be working on the other side of the vein. Sl. stitch into the next stitch(on the other side of the vein).
6. Row 1 Side B
Chain 1(mark this stitch), sc in next two stitches. Hdc in next 3 stitches. Dc in next 10 stitches. Hdc in next 3 stitches. Sc in next 3 stitches. We should have reached the end of the vein by now. Side B completed.
7. Do not turn. Continue working around . slip stitch in to the chain 1 of previous row( which we had marked previously, not shown in the image).
8. Row 2 side A:
Repeat Row 1 side A
9. Row 2 side B:
Sl. stitch into slip stitch of previous row. Chain 2 and sl. st. into the base stitch(like a picot). This is to get a pointed edge. Repeat row 1 side B and fasten off
Right side of the leaf
Wrong side of the leaf
Weave in ends and make as many leave as you want.
I used felt pom-pom balls to replicate flowers between the leaves.
Stem of the pom ball:
1. Make a sl. st. with a long tail.
2. Ch 7
3. Sl stitch into second chain from hook and remaining 5 chains(6 stitches)
4. Fasten off leaving a tail equal to the initial tail.
5. Thread both the ends together into a tapestry needle.
6. Insert into the felt pom-ball.
I pull it snug , so I can adjust the knot in step-7 to prevent gap between the knot and the ball.
7. Tie a knot as close to the ball as possible, tighten it and tie another knot.
You see the gap ??? Pull the stem outwards to remove the gap.
8. Cut tail and apply some fabric glue
The flower-like felt balls are ready.
I used them to alternate between the leaves
Assembling 1. Ch 10 and Sl. st. into the first chain to make a circle

2. Ch 5 and join leaf by doing sc into the top end of the leaf
3. Ch 5 and join pom-ball stem using sc.
Continue alternating between leaves and pom-balls (ending with a leaf) until desired length is reached.
4. After joining the last leaf, chain 15 and slip stitch in to the 10th chain from hook(creates a round).
5. Make 10 scs into the round and continue making SCs into the chains across the leaves and pom-balls. On reaching the other end the torana , make 10SCs into the round and fasten off.
We are doing this just to give extra strength to the hanging string. Weave in ends and your torara/Indian bunting is ready. Ta-dahhhh!!!
Hang it on your front door and step back and admire!!!!

I was so eager to hang the torana that I forgot to cut the weaved-in tail 🙁 😛 Do you see it ??? This was my Diwali project.

If you like this torana, please do leave me a comment, I would be very happy to hear from you. 🙂

It’s almost Friday guys, hang in there!! 😉
Till I post again!
