Namaste and Welcome to Asmi!
About me
So you want to know more about me ? That’s awesome!!
My name is Ranjitha and I’m the maker, designer, coder and photographer behind Asmi. I was born in Bangalore, India and currently live in Vancouver, Canada with my husband and our baby boy. You can get to know me more HERE and HERE. 🙂
I grew up watching my mum knit and crochet and I really liked the finished products she made. They were usually sweaters/cardigans or home decor. So I was drawn towards them too. I first learned to knit when I was in 4th grade, but didn’t pursue it for long and gave up.
Fast forward to 2011, my husband had started a new job which had a longer commute and that gave me some extra me time in the evenings. So I was looking for some activity to do because I didn’t want to spend that time entirely just watching TV. I’d heard from my mum that crochet helps her destress and relax, so I naturally inclined towards giving it a try. I borrowed some yarn and a crochet hook from mum to give it a try, not wanting to spend on supplies as I wasn’t sure if I would pursue it. I’d go to my mum’s place over the weekend and ask her to teach me some basic stitches, which I’d practise for the rest of the week. Soon I was hooked and couldn’t wait for the weekend to learn something new and started browsing online for some simple projects.
My first project was a crochet scarf, followed by a few pouches and a purse. Then there was no looking back and there has rarely been a day that’s ends without some crochet/knit time. I think I now have 4 sets of crochet hooks and 3 sets of knitting needles. And I might not be stop shopping anytime soon. I have another crochet hook set on the way, because I next plan is to make polymer clay covered crochet hooks. I’d made a few in 2012 and now I want to make more 🙂
I really enjoy making Amigurumi toys. My love for it is quite new and it started after my bubba was born and it has resulted in me making many amigurumi animals. I have always loved free crochet patterns and that is the reason I post free Amigurumi patterns.
About Asmi
What does Asmi mean ? A lot of people ask me this question.
Asmi (pronounced like us-me) is a Sanskrit word and it means “I am” and represents self confidence. It speaks to my Indian roots and sums up the feel I want for my brand. Since most of what I do here involves handwork, ‘Asmi Handmade’ felt right. The word Asmi is not only rooted in heritage but also quite literally offers a voice to everything I make “I am Handmade” 🙂
Initially I started this blog as an online journal for my crochet and knit projects, but as my crochet and knitting skills improved, I started posting patterns and tutorials too. Currently I have over 20 patterns and tutorials posted here and I’m constantly working on putting more out there.
Thank you for visiting my wee chunk of the web and don’t hesitate to say Hi! 🙂
