Crochet hanging basket free pattern

Learn to make crochet hanging baskets using the crochet hanging basket free pattern. It’s a quick crochet project which can easily be completed in under an hour. The pattern is available in 2 sizes, mini and small. The mini crochet hanging basket is perfect for storing trinkets and jewelry. I love storing my handmade wirework rings in them. You can hang them up near your dresser table for quick access to all your trinkets 🙂

This hanging basket can be made with any yarn, but if you use a yarn that is stiff and has some body to it, then the finished basket will retain its shape. I have used nylon yarn which is like a thinner version of clothes line and is quite stiff and you’ll see that my baskets retain their shape really well. However they are functional irrespective of the type of yarn you use. So grab your hook and some yarn and let’s get started 🙂

Supplies:

  • Small yarn of worsted weight yarn. I have used nylon thread as it has stiff and sturdy to it and gives the basket a shape
  • Small amount of White yarn.
  • Small amount of black yarn for embroidering the eyes/Plastic safety eyes
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • MC – Magic Circle
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
  • 3 sc inc –  3 single crochet in the specified stitch
  • [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round

Pattern Notes:

  • This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
  • The finished measurements from top of handle to the bottom of the basket: Mini basket – 4″ Small basket – 5″
  • The basket can be made with any yarn, but if you use a yarn that is stiff and has some body to it, then the finished basket will retain its shape. I have used nylon yarn which is a thinner version of clothes line and is quite stiff. This is what makes my baskets retain their shape really well.
  • The pattern is available in 2 sizes, mini and small. When you see two numbers side by side in the pattern, the first one represents mini and the second is for small crochet hanging basket.
  • 3 sc inc is used in the pattern for shaping. Whenever you see that, make 3 single crochet stitches in the specified stitch.

Pattern:

MC
R1: 6sc into the circle [6]
R2: 6 inc [12]
R3: *(1 sc, 1 inc); rep from * 6 times [18] R4: *(2 sc, 1 inc); rep from * 6 times [24] R5: *(3 sc, 1 inc); rep from * 6 times [30]

Skip to R7 for mini size basket. Continue to R6 for small size baskets.
R6: *(4 sc, 1 inc); rep from * 6 times [36]

R7: 3 sc inc in the first stitch, 29(35) sc [32, 38]

R8: 1 sc, 3 sc inc in the next stitch, 30(36) sc [34, 40]

R9: 2 sc, 9(11) sc, 8(9) dec, 7(9) sc [26, 31]

R10: 2 sc, 1 sl st in the next stitch, ch 10, 1 sl st join back in the same stitch to form a loop, 26(31) hdc all around, 12 hdc inside the loop.

R11: 26(31) sl st [26, 31]

Pull the yarn to loosen the last sl st and pass it over the 10ch-loop and tighten it again. Cut yarn with a long tail, and wrap it around the loop a few times and then tie a knot using tapestry needle and tighten it. Weave in the ends.

And tadahhh, your basket is ready to use. I made a couple with cotton yarn too 🙂 I clearly couldn’t stop at 1 basket 🙂
