So let’s take a look at the Amigurumi brontosaurus dinosaur free crochet pattern.

Supplies:

  • Small amount of any worsted weight yarn (4-Medium) in any colour. I have used Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn in Aqua colour for one and Red heart Super saver in Shocking Pink. You can choose any colour of your choice.
  • Small amount of thin black yarn/thread for embroidering the eyes/Plastic safety eyes
  • 3mm crochet hook / suitable crochet hook
  • Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stitch markers (to mark the beginner of the round)
  • Stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • MC – Magic Circle
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
  • dec – sc2tog in the specified stitches
  • [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round
  • sc [x] – If you see sc followed by a number x, then make 1 sc in the next x stitches

Pattern Notes:

  • This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
  •  The entire dinosaur is worked in 1 piece, there is no sewing of any body part. You will need a small amount of separate yarn for the tail. To work the tail, use the other end of your skien or use another skien of yarn. If none of these options are convenient for you, then unroll a small amount of yarn from the existing skien before starting the project.
  • A well stuff body and head prevent the dreadful wobbly head.
  • WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies. French knots work great. Plastic safely eyes can be a choking hazard.

Tips before you start:

  • Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
  • The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
  • Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. They always turn out better when you do this. I say this from personal experience. 🙂 However this dinosaur is all made in one piece, so NO SEWING is involved here.

Legs: Make 4

MC
R1: 4 sc into the circle
R2: 4 inc  [8] R3-6: 1 sc in each stitch round  [8]

Cut yarn and weave in the ends 3 legs. Don’t cut yarn after making 4th leg and continue below.

R7: 1 sc in the next 4 stitches of the 4th leg, ch8, join new leg(let’s call it leg3) using 1 sc, 1 sc in the 3 stitches of leg3, ch1, turn, 1 SC into the next 15 stitches [16] R8-13: ch1, turn, 1 SC into the next 15 stitches [16] – 6 rounds

This creates the belly of the dinosaur. Now we will join the other 2 legs.

R14: turn, join new leg using 1sc, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches of this leg together with the belly stitches, 1sc into the next 8 stitches of just the belly, join another leg using 1 sc, 1 sc in the next 3 stitches of this leg together with the belly stitches. [16]

Body:

We have used 4 stitches of each leg and have 4 unworked stitches in each leg. To form the body of the dinosaur, we will work on the 4 unworked stitches of each leg and the stitches of the belly, all together in the round. Mark the first stitch as the beginning of the round using a stitch marker.

R15: Turn, 1 sc in the next 4 stitches of the leg, 1 sc in the next 8 stitches horizontally along the belly, 1 sc in the next 4 stitches of the next leg, 1 sc in the next 6 stitches vertically along the belly, 1 sc in the next 4 stitches of the leg, 1 sc in the next 8 stitches horizontally along the belly , 1 sc in the next 4 stitches of the next leg, 1 sc in the next 6 stitches vertically along the belly [44] (As shown in the below picture)At the end of R15, we have completed 1 round of the body, and reached the beginning of the round. We have a total of 44 stitches now.
From the beginning of the round, mark the 19th and 20th stitches. We will make increases in these 2 marked stitches.

R16: sc 18, inc in the next 2 stitches, sc 18, ch6, skip the 6 stitches at the back of the body [46]

Continue by joining the ch6 to the beginning of the round. (Sew picture below)

R17: sc 40, 1 sc in the next 6 chains [46]

R18: sc 18, 1 increase in the next stitch, sc 2, 1 increase in the next stitch, sc 24 [48]

Tail:

As shown in the below picture, a hole is created for the tail. Do not cut the yarn, leave it aside, we’ll pick it up when we resume working on the body later. To work the tail, use the other end of your skien or use another skien of yarn. If none of these options are convenient for you, then unroll a small amount of yarn from the existing skien before starting the project.  (Read Pattern Notes section)

Join new yarn with a long end and mark the beginning of the round for the tail. I have used the green yarn stand as my stitch marker here. Yellow one is for the body- which we’ll ignore for now.

Make the stitches on R1 as tight as you can to avoid any holes. If you see any holes then sew them shut using the long tail end.
R1-6
: 1 sc in each stitch around [12] (6 rounds)
R7: 4 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 dec [10] Start stuffing the tail now.

R8-15: 1sc in each stitch around [10] (8 rounds)
R16: sc 3, 1 dec, sc 3, 1 dec [8] Stuff again.

R17-26: 1 sc in each stitch around [8] (10 rounds)
R18: sc 2, 1 dec, sc 2, 1 dec [6] Stuff again.

R19-28: 1 sc in each stitch around [6] (10 rounds)
Stuff some more. Fasten off and thread the tail into a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut and give it a tug to make it pointy.
This completes the tail and now we’ll resume working on the body.

Body : (Continued..)

We will continue the Round Number from where we left off which is R19.

R19: 1 sc in each stitch round [48] R20: sc 43, 2 dec , sc 1 [46] R21: 1 sc in each stitch round [46] R22: sc 42, 2 dec [44] R23: 1 sc in each stitch round [44] R24: 1 dec, sc 39, 1 dec, sc 1  [42] R25: 1 sc in each stitch round [42]

Count and mark the 15th and 28th stitch from the beginning of the round.
We have 14 stitches for the neck and 28 stitches for the back of the dinosaur. We’ll work only on the back now.
Start stuffing the back part now.

R26: *(sc 2, 1 dec); repeat from * 7 times [21] R27: *(s 1c, 1 dec); repeat from * 7 times [14] R28: 7 dec [7] Cut yarn with a long tail to sew. Thread the tail on a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut. and weave in the end.

Neck:

Join yarn on one end the 14 stitches we left unworked for the neck. Stuff the neck as you go. You can use a chopstick to push the stuffing inside. Don’t wait till the end to stuff as it might get difficult to stuff.
R1-19: 1 sc in each stitch around [14] (20 rounds)

Head:

R20: sc 10, 2 dec [12]

R21: sc 10, 3sc-inc in next 2 stitches [16]

R22: sc 12, 2 inc in the next 2 stitches, sc 2 [18]

R23: sc 13, 2 inc in the next 2 stitches, sc 3 [20]

R24: 1 sc in each stitch around [20]

R25: sc 12, 4 dec [16] Stuff the remaining part of the neck and the head now.

R26: *(sc 2, 1 dec); repeat from * all around [12]

R27: 6 dec [6] Fasten off and thread the tail into tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut. Weave in the ends!

Eyes:

Make French Knots using thin crochet thread on R22 of the head on both sides of the face.
