Design Inspiration:
Most of my Amigurumi projects are inspired by animals. I like to make them look realistic at the same time maintain their cuteness and cuddly. My bub’s story books are sometimes the best inspiration for my Amigurumi projects. And this project was a result of one such story book called the “A Squash and a squeeze”. It’s a hilarious and fun read and has many farm animals in it. I absolutely love the illustrations, specially the pig and I couldn’t stop myself from crocheting one. My bub likes to hold this toy when we ready any book that have pigs in them.
There are usually so many Amigurumi patterns out there already that it’s quite challenging for your work to get noticed. So how do I try to make them stand out. By making realistic-ish looking versions of them and making 4 legged versions of the animals as they aren’t very common.
So let’s take a look at the Amigurumi tiny pig free crochet pattern.
Supplies:
- ~25g/45m of any worsted weight yarn (4-Medium) in light pink colour. I have used Red Heart Super saver yarn in the colour Petal Pink
- Small amount of any yarn medium weight (4-Medium) in black colour for the hooves. I have used Red Heart Super saver yarn in the colour black
- Small amount of crochet thread in black colour OR Safety eyes
- 2.75 crochet hook / suitable crochet hook (body)
- 1.75 crochet hook / suitable crochet hook (legs, ears)
- Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
- Stitch markers (to mark the beginner of the round, optional)
- Stuffing
Abbreviations:
- Ch – chain
- MC – Magic Circle
- Sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
- dec – sc2tog in the specified stitches (this is a decrease)
- [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round
- sc [x] – If you see sc followed by a number x, then make 1 sc in the next x stitches
Skill Level:
Easy
Construction:
The head, body, and tail of the pig are made in 1 piece. The legs are crocheted separately and sewed on to the body later.
Pattern Notes:
- This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
- The Amigurumi tiny pig looks good when the stitches on the stem are tighter, the head can be crochet loose as it will give it a fuller look.
- WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies. French knots work great. Plastic safely eyes can be a choking hazard. If you want to add a face to the broccoli, I’d recommend French knots using thin black yarn/thread.
Generic Amigurumi Tips:
- Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
- The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
- Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. They always turn out better when you do this. I say this from personal experience.
