Design inspiration:
I’m someone who always has a mug of tea/coffee or hot water at my desk and don’t like condensation rings, so that means I needed to crochet some coasters. I recently knitted a scarf which took me a while to complete and felt I needed something quick as my next project. Also I hadn’t picked up my crochet hook in a while, which meant it was the perfect time for some crocheted coasters.
Read on if you’d like to make your own set.
Supplies:
- Small amount of any light weight cotton yarn. Even acrilic yarn can be used if you plan to only place coffee/tea mugs on them. Mugs don’t get too hot anyway.
- 4mm crochet hook
- Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
Abbreviations:
- Ch – chain
- Sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- MC – Magic circle
Pattern Notes:
- Ch2 in the beginning of each round is the equivalent of a dc. I prefer to ch2 as ch3 feels a bit too tall for a dc.
- Magic circle is a technique used to start a crochet project in the round. If you want to learn to make a Magic circle, watch the video HERE.
Pattern:
R1: (1dc, ch1) 10 times into the magic circle and at the end tighten it.
R2: Ch2, 2dc, ch1 in the ch1 space, (3dc,ch1) 9 times- all in the ch1 spaces around, SL stitch into the top of ch3 to complete the round.
R3: Sl stitch into 2 dcs of previous round and the ch1 space.
Ch2,dc,ch2,2dc in the ch1 space, (2dc,ch2,2dc) 9 times all in the ch1 spaces around, SL stitch into the top of ch2 to complete the round.
R4: Sl stitch into 1 DC of previous round, (1sc,5dc,1sc in the ch1 spaces around, skip 1 dc, sl stitch in next dc, skip next dc) 9 times. Sl st into the first SC and fasten off.
Weave in the end and your coaster is ready.
I gifted one set to my sister and made another for myself.
