This knitted fingerless mittens pattern might be the easiest knitted mittens pattern you’ll ever find, which makes it the perfect knitting pattern for absolute beginners. It doesn’t get too cold where I live, but just enough to stuff your hands into your pockets. I take the train to work and while walking to the train station or waiting for the train, I’m constantly handling my phone either listening to music or messaging someone or even writing blog posts , I think fingerless mittens are the best for such weather. Don’t you think so? If you’ve ever wondered how to knit then, then this is the knitted fingerless mitten pattern is for you.

Pattern Notes:

  • This knitted fingerless mittens pattern is very simple and uses only basic knit and purl stitches, which makes them beginner friendly.
  • These mittens are knitted flat using straight knitting needles and then the sides are sewn together leaving a gap for the thumb.
  • You can measure your hands between the wrist and halfway up to your  fingers. This will be the length of your mittens.
  • Selvedge refers to the two sides (left and right) of your knitting project. You have to follow instructions specified in the beginning and end each row in the pattern to get a neat looking selvedge.
  • Ribbing pattern– referred to the top and bottom of the mittens. Alternating knit and purl stitches for the ribbing.
  • Stockinette stitch– Knitting all in the right side and purling all on the wrong side
  • Tip: Make sure the last purl stitch at the end of each round is tight to get a neat looking selvedge.

R1-12: Sl1 , *(K1, P1); repeat until 1 stitch left, P1 (Colour A)

R13-14: Sl1, K all (Colour A), P1 for 2 rows

R15-16: Sl1, P all (Colour B) for 2 rows
Repeat above R13-16, 4 more times or until the piece measures 4 inches.

R33-38: Sl1 , *(K1, P1); repeat until 1 stitch left, P1 (Colour A) or until it measures 1 inch.

Sew the edges using the the selvedge stitching leaving a gap to insert the thumb. I’d recommend using mattress stitch to sew the edges. You can learn how to seam using the mattress stitch by watching this video HERE. Put the gloves on first to tell where the gap should be for the thumb and do not seam the thumb part. Weave in the ends and the fingerless mittens are ready to use .
