Amigurumi Fish free crochet pattern
If you are looking for a fun and quick Amigurumi project, then this Amigurumi fish free crochet pattern is for you. It is a super quick and fun project because can be completed in a couple of hours and can be made in any colour. You can add a keyring to make it a keychain or a bag charm. IF you want to use it as a hanging toy for the stroller or even a crib mobile, I’d recommend you embroider the eyes because plastic safety eyes sometimes come off when you pull hard on them.

Let’s take a look at the Amigurumi fish free crochet pattern. Shall we?
Supplies:
- Small amount of white/off white and corn yellow worsted weight yarn. I’ve used Red Heart Super saver in Aran and Cornmeal colours
- Small amount of black yarn for embroidering the eyes and mouth/Plastic safety eyes
- 4mm crochet hook
- Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
- Stuffing
Abbreviations:
- Ch – chain
- MC – Magic Circle
- Sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round
Pattern Notes:
- This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so your can use any yarn with a suitable hook.
- WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies because plastic safely eyes can be a choking hazard. French knots work great and you can watch the video on how I make them HERE.
Tips before you start:
- Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter because it prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
- The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it, so don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
- Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing because this helps in keeping them in the right place and visualize before sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. I say this from personal experience as they always turn out better looking when you do this. 🙂
Pattern:
Body:
MC
R1: 5sc into the circle
R2-5: 1sc in each stitch around [5]
Stuff the nose very lightly, you can leave it unstuffed if you leave a initial long tail from the MC and push that into the nose. It works as stuffing.
R6: 2sc in next stitch [10]
R7: *(1sc in the next stitch, 2sc in next stitch); rep from * 5 times [15]
R8: *(1sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in next stitch); rep from * 5 times [20]
Switch to yellow yarn. Do not cut white yarn. We will pick it up after 2 rounds.
R9: *(1sc in the next 3 stitches, 2sc in next stitch); rep from * 5 times [25]
R10: *(1sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in next stitch); rep from * 5 times [30]
In white yarn:
R11: *(1sc in the next 5 stitches, 2sc in next stitch); rep from * 5 times [35]
R12: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
In Yellow yarn:
R13-14: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
In white yarn:
R15-16: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
In Yellow yarn:
R17-18: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
In white yarn:
R19-20: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
In Yellow yarn:
R21-22: 1sc in each stitch around [35]
Do not join in the round using sl st.
Place the eyes between R8 and R9 on both sides and then insert stuffing. Stuff lightly, we don’t need a ball shaped fish, but a flatter fluffy shape.
R23: Ch1, hold the back and the front stitches together and make 1sc in each stitch around. [18]
We are doing this to close the opening because the fish’s back edge is a flat straight line
You will have a total of 18 stitches including the ch1.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Tail:
R1: Skip 7 stitches and join yarn in the 8th stitch using 1sc, 1sc in the next 3 stitches [4]
R2-3: Turn, (ch1,1sc in same stitch), 1sc in the next 2 stitches, 2sc in the last stitch [6]
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Fins: Make 2 in yellow yarn and 2 in white yarn
Ch8
R1: sc2tog in 2nd and 3rd ch from the hook, 1sc in the next 3ch, sc2tog in the last 2ch [5]
R2: Turn, sc2tog in the first 2 stitches, 1sc in the next stitch, sc2tog in the last 2 stitches [3]
R3: Turn, sc3tog, ch1
Cut yarn and fasten off with a long tail to sew.
Join the 2 yellow fins holding wrong sides together as shown below:
Sew them to the base of the fish body.
Stitch the white fins to both the sides of the body between R14 and R15.
How cute is the front view of this fish 🙂
Mouth:
Cut a 10 inch long piece of black yarn and thread through the centre of magic circle and bring out on the left side, then go into the centre of the magic circle again and then come out on the right side.
Repeat this once and hide the black yarn inside the fish body.
So this completes the fish and it’s ready to use as a toy, bag charm or keychain. What would you use this Amigurumi fish as?
