My inspiration for this Amigurumi elephant free crochet pattern came from the elephants I’ve seen during festivals in India. Elephants in India are decked up with flowers and embellishments during festivals and processions. I have also made an embellishment for Gaja and will be posting the free pattern for it here soon.

So let’s take a look at the Amigurumi elephant free crochet pattern.

Supplies:

  • ~25g/50metres of any yarn. I have used Red Heart Super saver worsted weight (4-Medium) yarn in the colour Dusty Gray.
  • Small amount of black thread/safety eyes for the eyes
  • 75mm crochet hook / suitable crochet hook
  • Large eye tapestry needle and scissors
  • Stitch markers/ Scrap piece of yarn for marking beginning of round
  • Stuffing
  • Embellishments (Optional)

Abbreviations:

  • Ch – chain
  • MC – Magic Circle
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – 2 single crochet in the specified stitch (this is an increase)
  • dec – sc2tog in the specified stitches (this is a decrease)
  • [Number] – Stitch count at the end of the round
  • sc [x] – If you see sc followed by a number x, then make 1 sc in the next x stitches

Skill Level:

Easy

Construction:

The whole elephant, except for the ears is constructed in 1 piece. There is no sewing involved while making the body, head, trunk and legs. The ears are crocheted separately and sewed on later. The tail of the elephant is attached to the body before making the hind leg.

Pattern Notes:

  • This project is made with worsted weight yarn, however there is no gauge required, so you can use any yarn with a suitable hook
  • The pattern is worked in continuous rounds without slip stitch at the beginning of the round
  • A well stuffed body, head and legs give the elephant a very elegant look.
  • WARNING: Embroider the eyes if using it as a toy for babies. French knots work great. Plastic safety eyes can be a choking hazard.
  • Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 or 2 sizes smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
  • The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits, but stuff firmly.

Generic Amigurumi Tips:

  • Amigurumi always looks better when the stitches are tighter, this also prevents the stuffing from poking out. Use 1 size smaller hook than your yarn calls for.
  • The look of the Amigurumi finished object depends a lot on how you stuff it. Don’t be impatient and stuff too much in one go. Do it in bits.
  • Always pin the body parts together before you start sewing. Be it the limbs or the eyes, mouth, ears, antlers, horns, wings etc. Doesn’t matter even if they are really small parts, pinning them helps. They always turn out better when you do this. I say this from personal experience. 🙂

Important note: Before starting the project please read the Pattern Notes section.

Pattern:

Body and Head:

MC

Rnd 1: 6 sc into the circle

Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]

Rnd 3: *(sc 1, 1 inc); repeat from * all around [18]

Rnd 4: *(sc 2, 1 inc); repeat from * all around [24]

Rnd 5: *(sc 3, 1 inc); repeat from * all around [30]

Rnd 6: *(sc 4, 1 inc); repeat from * all around [36]

Rnd 7: *(sc 5, 1 inc); repeat from * all around [42]

Rnd 8-10: 1sc in each stitch around [42]

Trunk:

We will now branch out from the main working round and create a smaller round for the trunk.

Rnd 1: sc 12, join back to 1st stitch of the round. [12]

Rnd 2-6: 1 sc in each stitch around [12]

Start stuffing the trunk well, but not as firmly as the body.

Rnd 7: *(sc 2, 1 dec); rep from * 3 times[9]

Rnd 8-15: 1 sc in each stitch around [9]

Stuff this part lightly. ( Use a chopstick to push the stuffing in if necessary)

Rnd 16: *(sc 1, 1 dec); rep from * 3 times [6]

Rnd 17-20: 1 sc in each stitch around [6]

Do not stuff this part.

Fasten off and using a tapestry needle insert the tail into each stitch , but don’t cinch the hole shut (see pic

1) Hide the tail inside the trunk. This makes the trunk look more natural. To shape the trunk, bend the

trunk downwards at Rnd7 and upwards at Rnd16. This should give it the curved look.

Body(Continued):

Join new yarn leaving a long tail end. You have 30 unworked

stitches on the body.

Rnd 11-13: 1 sc in each stitch around [30]

Front Leg:

Rnd 1: sc 6, sk 18 stitches, join to the 19th stitch using 1 sc, sc 5. [12]

This forms a smaller circle for the front leg.

Rnd 2-6: 1 sc in each stitch around [12]

Stuff the leg firmly

Rnd 7: 6 dec [6]

Stuff some more.

Cut yarn , thread the tail into a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut. Hide the end inside the body.

Tail(Make before Back Leg)

Take a 6 inch long piece for yarn and thread into a tapestry needle. At the back of the body between Rnd 6 and Rnd 7, insert the tail from outside to the inside. Tie a few overlapping knots on the inside end (to get a big knot) and pull it to make sure it doesn’t come out of the stitches on the body. Attach a bead or just tie a knot to the outer end. Cut the excess off.

Back Leg:

Rnd 1: Skip 3 stitches beside the front leg, join new yarn leaving a long tail end into the 4th stitch using 1 sc. 1 sc in the next 11 stitches [12]

Work R2 by joining back to the first stitch to form a round.

Rnd 2-6: 1 sc in each stitch around [12]

Stuff the leg firmly.

Rnd 7: 6 dec [6]

Stuff some more.

Cut yarn , thread the tail into a tapestry needle and cinch the hole shut.

Ears(Make 2):

MC

Rnd 1: 6 sc into the circle

Rnd 2: 6 inc [12]

Rnd 3-5: 1sc in each stitch around [12]

Fasten off with a long tail to sew. Sew the ears between Rnd 5 and Rnd 8 of the body, and 2-3 stitches behind the trunk.

Eyes:

Embroider the eyes between Rnd 8 and Rnd 9 of the head. Marking the eyes using pins before sewing them helps them keep symmetrical.

Finishing:

Use the long tail end you had left at the beginning of the back leg, to sew the gap between the two legs. Use the long tail you left when you started Rnd 11 of the body, sew the gap underneath between the trunk and the body. Close both the gaps using whip stitch and hide the ends inside the body.
